“Leveraging Our History”

How do you tell your origin story? I don’t think I can tell mine 32 generations back, as the Gospel of Matthew does, nor would I want to. How we tell our stories, and what stories we choose to tell, say a lot about who we are, or maybe who we aspire to be, and what makes us unique in the world. Matthew begins Jesus’s birth story all the way back to Abraham. Not to Adam or to Noah, but to Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish people. Jesus’s Jewish roots are critical to Matthew’s audience of Jewish Christians. But Matthew is affirming their roots as well. How we tell our story illuminates what is most important to us today. Churches are no different! Behind congregational names, dates, and events is meaning, purpose, and identity. What we choose to use today from the past matters. Not everything from the past will help us today. Yet, some things are still relevant, if applied appropriately. Our stories matter. They enlighten who we are today and are used by God to call us into tomorrow. See you Sunday! Pastor Debbie.
